What is a MIAM?   A Mediation Information Assessment Meeting is a meeting with a specially qualified family mediator who will explain to you what you can expect from the mediation process and whether this is the best option for your particular situation. Usually a MIAM is a separate one to one meeting with each partner although sometimes you can attend part of the meeting with your former partner if you both want to do so.

Most divorcing and separating couples in England and Wales who want to use the court process to resolve any questions about children or money have to show that they have attended a MIAM before they can apply for a court order.

At a MIAM which is a first meeting with Susan, she will explain to you how the mediation process works, what it involves and the mediator’s role, what it is and is not. She will ask you to discuss your particular circumstances and what issues you would like to resolve at mediation. These may be about your children if you have any, property or financial issues or all three. You will be able to ask any questions about the process and find out about the various other alternative dispute resolutions options open to you, including going to court, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each option relevant to your situation

Susan will make an assessment to decide whether or not mediation is a suitable way forward for you to help resolve the issues surrounding the breakdown of your relationship and you can then decide whether you wish to proceed.
